Irma Hemmings Bridges
After graduating from Hackensack Normal School for Women's Physical Education in 1895, Irma began her ascent into the Hackensack Board of Education, initially leading the fight to bring badminton to its present prominence (and employing the talents of her esteemed cousin Ethel Doldridge Bridges to sew the bloomers for the entire girl's team). She then moved into administration within the Hackensack Senior High School. The favorite aspect of her job was the organization of the freshmen class parties: "They are such a bashful bunch, with the boys taking refuge on the west side of the gym and the timid young girls opposite, gazing at them with hungry 'Why don't you start something?' eyes. Eventually, however, they transform, their heads fairly swollen with almightiness and pride, into the confident men and women that graduate from our fair institution! Our motto? 'Deeds determine destiny!'"
